Problem:

How Backwards Can We Possibly Be?

I've had to take some time to figure this one out.

You see farmers on the TV right now, fighting for their livelihoods. But something just isn't right.

In and amidst the current crashing of the food system, I've been watching our government completely change "sides", right in front of my very eyes.

For years they have been fuelling Monsanto, now Bayer, in what can only be called complete devastation of our farm land - and in turn, our economy. How they have supported large, monoculture crops, complete with cancerous sprays, and poisonous, irreversible effects on our ecosystem, is not only through policy and regulation but through fooling you,

The way it's worked for decades now, is rural residents would allow Mr. Nice Farmer, to come and farm genetically modified "food" their land, and not only would he pay them to do so, (not much) the government would support the entire process by making sure the resident didn't have to pay as much to THEM, each year by way of their taxes. Aka you will not owe us as much money as you would if you left the land alone. Just let us farm it how we see fit. Aka we support Monsanto through and through.

For YEARS Canadians, Americans, the Netherlands, and many many other countries have been "farming" genetically modified corn, gmo soy, gmo canola and the all powerful wheat in this way. All completely backed by government authorities. Also for years now, the herbicides, insecticides and fungicides have changed from contact based, to systemic - meaning they last and last in the environment, and are mobile, travelling through our water systems, (alongside the excess synthetic fertilizers, also being dumped into our lakes).

This is of course why we can't swim in Southern Ontario in the summer any more, because the bacteria levels in our lakes are so high - it is literally unsafe for us to do so....

Imagine how it's affecting our ecosystem then?

So we are getting hit from all sides here, while the corporations build their empire, effectively reaching the point of complete control over our food system, and small scale farmers have all but disappeared in the process. And so have our independent food processing plants, as well as any type of cold storage facility that one might hope to have functioning for a region such as this, once abundant in local fruits and vegetables.

And now, with a slight of hand, and a raise in "tariff", (towards those who have literally been taking advantage of this system for years), we somehow, are now rushing to their defence, screaming - support the farmers!?!

Excuse me, what? What in the hell just happened here?

Take a second to take this all in. Your government, who created the problem in the first place, is now who is coming in to save the day?

Saying, "oh we really have to do something about this" so let's do something dramatic, that gets the people on the side of the "farmers"  who are farming the WRONG WAY?

Are you sure we want those farmers to have access to the nitrogen that is so readily killing our environment with the way it's being used? Aka the way the government has allowed farmers to do this is what is insane. And now, we the people are mad at the government for doing a complete 180 to change it?

The funniest part about this all is you know what else has nitrogen in it? Shit. Literally poop. Yep. That's how it's always been done people, you use poop from your animals, as part of the organic matter in your compost. That in combination with your grass/yard waste, food scraps, animal carcasses, and carbon material ie wood chips, branches etc, that is what makes up healthy soil. Year after year.

But now, you've been told that shit is bad, cows are bad, everything is bad, but chemicals are good?

True farmers don't need synthetic nitrogen! We already have exactly what we need on our farm. In fact, micro-organisms don't want it either! It doesn't fix any of the problems we now face as farmers, charged with still having to figure out how to grow food with so many obstacles against us, policy against us, sales channels and distribution against us and seemingly even our potential customers never having ever heard of us?

And now our government has flipped you even more on your head, making you think the conventional farmers need your support and attention?

While there is no doubt that is an insane set up, and those so called "farmers" have every right to be livid, you'll just simply have to do some more digging into the REAL problem at hand because I assure you this is simply not it.

And the more time and energy we spend angry at our government or in a completely unaware state, the further our system is crashing to the ground. At the very time we should be rebuilding it, we're caught in the drama and still not actually stopping ourselves from a society at large who shops for their produce at the grocery store, but instead at the local, small scale FARMS that we have right here in Niagara.

Our people are suffering Niagara. Just because you may not see it or experience it in your day to day, does not mean it's not happening.

And it's definitely time we actually did something about it.

Small Scale Farms

Solution:

Community Coming Together

1. It's time to make a change. It's time to make a difference. We can't keep focused on all the things we don't want, we have to look towards what we do want.

Join us as we attempt to raise 20 thousand dollars, to not only install our walk in fridge and freezer (taking us to the next level in terms of operation capability) but also as we attempt to raise awareness and efficiency of our model. The small scale model, capable of feeding literally hundreds of thousands of people.

2. Give to Grow. We are just getting ready to launch this formally but here is a sneak peak into our latest initiative called Give to Grow. This is a fundraiser for your church, school, team or even just your family, as well as a way for us all to unite through the selling of local produce.

It’s similar to us all doing a fundraiser for chocolate bars but swap that, for farm fresh food.

Plus it's completely digital so there's literally no extra work for anyone on your team, besides helping us spread the word.

We are very excited about this and are looking to speak with each and every person in this region, looking to make a very large impact.

We are looking for more hands to help in the garden this Friday at 6pm. No experience necessary.

FREE STUFF!

We have a brand new market in Niagara at our home base/farm/food hub, 13145 Lundy's Lane.

This Friday and every Friday from 3-7pm, and then again on Saturday from 10-3pm we are showcasing Niagara Vendors and their products from our front yard! Come check us out and while you're at it, bring us your old clothes, and we'll make sure they find a good home. We've been in the textile game a long time, and trust me when I say it's much better for us as a community to reuse our clothing than it is to donate it to a major non profit. Not sure why? I encourage you to look a little deeper into the textile industry and how it functions.

So instead, why not reuse our STUFF! In preparation for our upcoming PAWN SHOP LAUNCH, we will be hosting a weekly "FREE" table, full of who knows what. Clothing, appliances, books, stuff - everything on this table will be absolutely FREE, each and every week, (limit 2 items per person).

For those of you looking to declutter and get rid of things you no longer need or use, this is a great way to pay your items forward to someone who can make good use of it.

All are welcome.

Items accepted: appliances, tools, books, clothes, building materials, lamps, cookware, jewellery, canned goods, shoes etc.

If you're not sure if we accept something in particular please email [email protected] to find out.

A NEW WEEKLY FARM MARKET!

We have a food truck,

For years we have worked markets and they’ve always been hard. You pack everything up, head to the location, set up your tent, unload it all, talk with customers all day, pack everything back up bring it back home just to unpack it all again.

Every single week.

All this for very little money too - with the hopes that at least you got the word out you even exist.

This year we are doing something different.

Because we already have so many local vendors, and more on the way, WE are going to do all the work because WE are going to set up the market for our vendors and farmers. WE are going to sell their products for them - and they technically don’t even have to be there if they don’t want to be or can’t be.

Our table fee is just $500 for the entire season, and what we do with that $500 is simply buy all of their product from then right off the hop. Then we sell that product to you.

This is a fantastic twist on a very basic wholesale/retail model. All it means is we set up their table for them, in their brand etc and then we can also help sell their product for them - once they’ve already made a sale because we are who purchased their product from them!

Come shop this very unique market this Friday (3-7pm) or Saturday (10-3pm). We are still open from 10-3pm on Fridays too but we’ve expanded our hours and will be open until 7pm for this fantastic opportunity.

We even have ice cream now, making your market experience complete. We are also currently setting up a mobile chicken coop so you can hang out with our beautiful birds while you sit under the apple tree for a much needed rest 🙂

Come give us a shot Niagara and show your love for Niagara farmers and businesses!
